Krill are small shrimp-like crustaceans found in all oceans and serve as a major food source for much of the marine life. Particularly abundant supplies that can be fished are the Antarctic krill or Euphausia superba. Similar to fish, krill consume a diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids (eg, algae) and are thereby a natural source of EPA and DHA. 7. Krill meal is a protein rich feedstuff from aquatic organisms. The word krill is derived from the Norwegian “krill” which stands for young fish fry and zooplankton. In the colloquial languages it means a small, shrimp-like, phosphorescent crustacea, especially of the genus Euphausia (order: Euphausiacea). Major species are(,,).

Krill are rich in protein and omega-3 fatty acids, meaning they are manufactured into supplements for human consumption. What are the krill oil side effects? Overall, krill oil should be used as per the manufacturer’s guidelines. Side effects from krill oil are very rare but are generally the same as fish . In particular, in diets low in fish meal, krill meal’s feed attractants increase palatability and improves growth performance. Krill for aquaculture. Continued growth of aquaculture and the change from small-scale to high intensity, industrial farming has increased the need for sustainable protein sources in both shrimp and fish feeds.

Containing about 14 ~o crude protein and 4 ~o fat, krill meat is considered by many specialists to be a rich potential source of nutrients for farm animals and for direct human consumption. There are several commercial propositions on how to make .   Methods. Collagen-induced arthritis susceptible DBA/1 mice were provided ad libitum access to a control diet or diets supplemented with either krill oil or fish oil throughout the were 14 mice in each of the 3 treatment groups. When krill was the sole source of protein, growth of the fish was reported to be lower than the fishmeal-fed control. When isocaloric diets in which the protein contents were solely derived from krill or fishmeal were fed to channel catfish for weeks, growth on the krill-fed fish was about 80 percent of those fed the fishmeal diet (Figure 7).
